Urban development

and big city vibe in EnergyMetropolis Esbjerg
Family and housing
The Municipality of Esbjerg is changing rapidly. Private and public building projects are changing urban living, housing and attractions.

Esbjerg Strand

In the northern part of the port of Esbjerg an important urban development project is being realised. It’s called Esbjerg Strand meaning “Esbjerg Beach”. The vision is to create an attractive urban area with a marina with restaurants, cafes and shops, recreational maritime functions, green areas, swimming facilities, headquaters for port-related companies and private and public services. The first phase of the project has been realised, and once finished the new area will give citizens and tourists better access to one of our main attractions: The sea.

The Wadden Sea Centre

The Wadden Sea is Denmark’s largest National park and appointed World Heritage by UNESCO. With a rebuilding and extension of the Wadden Sea Centre unique exhibition and communication facilities are available. The
architecture is sustainable, visionary and bold and brings forth the Centre as an didactic information centre of the future.

The Wadden Sea Centre is planned to be opened in 2017.

The pedestrian street

The transformation of the pedestrian street Kongensgade to “the citizens’ street” involves a special new paving bearing resemblance to the bottom of the sea.

Special attention has also been given to create spaces in the urban room where people can sit and rest and enjoy the lively street. Other places offer figures and colors inviting to fun and play.

The gangway

Esbjerg was built around the harbour, and with the new gangway called “Landgangen” the city and the harbour will be brought closer together.

The vision is to create an attractive and architecturally interesting gathering place with good views over the active harbour and activities along the way.

Together with a new boardwalk along Havnegade the story of Esbjerg will be told and citizens, visitors and tourists have a new landmark to enjoy.

The gangway is to be opened in 2017.

BROEN Shopping

A new shopping center will open in the heart of Esbjerg in 2017. It’s called BROEN meaning the bridge.

BROEN will include around 70 shops and stores, cafes, restaurants, a fittnesscenter and cinemas.

The shopping center is placed at one end of the pedestrian street, and will be connecting the center of the city with the urban area east of the railway.

BROEN will be a place for the entire family, young people, friends and couples and will supplement the renovated pedestrian street well.
